New York City Sexual Abuse Lawyers
For Sexual Predators, Time is Up!
One of New York’s highest-rated personal injury attorneys, Michael S. Lamonsoff, Esq. has spent more than twenty-five years winning cases on behalf of victims of sexual abuse, including rape, sexual molestation and improper touching. Mr. Lamonsoff is now able to use a new and powerful “tool” in order in order to bring his clients some form of justice. Namely, in 2019, the Child Victim’s Act and the New Rape Laws were passed to extend the statute of limitations for when victims of sexual abuse, sexual assault, rape and sexual molestation can bring lawsuits for the horrors that they have endured.
Our results: $16 Million Verdict against New York City Board of Education for Sexual Abuse by New York City Teacher
Just last year, Mr. Lamonsoff, Esq. and his firm won a record-breaking $16 million verdict on behalf of a child who was sexually molested by her teacher at a New York City school.
The win came after a hard-fought litigation battle, characterized by and an arrogant refusal by the attorneys for the city to offer any reasonable settlement to Mr. Lamonsoff’s client prior to trial. After originally starting with $150,000, the City essentially made a mere $350,000 offer to settle the case just before the jury was sent out to deliberate. Upon advice and consent of his clients, Mr. Lamonsoff rejected the City’s offer. A top sexual abuse lawyer in NYC, Mr. Lamonsoff wanted to not just get any form of money compensation for the victim. Mr. Lamonsoff wanted to punish the City and the Board of Education by exposing their arrogance with the hopes that they, and any other institution, would be far more vigilant in protecting our children from this ever happening again.
After a relatively short deliberation, the jury awarded one of the highest verdicts in New York’s history. The jury found that the Board of Education acted with reckless disregard for the child entrusted to their care.
The verdict will never change what happened and no amount of money would ever compensate this little girl with the horror she went through.
“My law firm litigates any kind of case in which somebody has been injured
through the negligence of somebody else. Our job is to provide the most aggressive, the most professional and the most unyielding litigation on behalf of my clients.” – Michael S. Lamonsoff, Esq.
Michael S. Lamonsoff, Esq. is Uniquely Qualified to bring lawsuits against Sexual Predators
Mr. Lamonsoff understands that winning justice for a sexual assault survivor requires not just legal expertise. It also demands a compassionate understanding of the traumatic and long-lasting effects that sexual assault can have on the spirit and mental condition of a victim.
Long before becoming an attorney, Mr. Lamonsoff earned both Master of Arts and Master of Education degrees in psychology from Columbia University. During his post-graduate work and thereafter as a therapist, Mr. Lamonsoff was also trained on how to counsel victims of sexual abuse.
Mr. Lamonsoff is not just a fighter willing and able to take all of the necessary legal steps to win his clients’ battles. He is also uniquely qualified to understand with compassion how to help survivors of sexual abuse tell their story, fight the sexual abusers, and get some type of closure. The key to winning a verdict for survivors of sexual abuse, says Mr. Lamonsoff, is to understand the psychology of both your client and sexual predator.
Child survivors of sexual assault don’t understand what they have been through. They suffer in silence and may even blame themselves. They don’t have the capacity and experience to understand that they have done nothing wrong. Many times, they don’t even tell their parents for fear of getting punished. Additionally, adult sexual abuse victims often feel ashamed and at fault for the sexual assault and don’t report what has happened to them.”
New Laws Offer Help for Sexual Abuse Victims
In New York, we are working hard to help sexual abuse victims receive justice. New laws went into effect in 2019 making it easier for sexual assault survivors to press both criminal and civil charges.
The “Child Victims Act” (CVA), effective August 2019:
- Extends New York’s statutes of limitations for survivors who were sexually abused as children
- Gives survivors until their 28th birthday to bring criminal charges against their sexual abusers
- Allows survivors to bring a civil action any time before they turn 55
- Encourages victims to file a claim for money damages not just against their abusers, but also against any or public and private institutions that could have prevented the abuse and failed to do so (the Act doesn’t specifically speak about this- survivors were always able to press charges for money damages?)
- Provides survivors of child sexual abuse, a one year, one-time-only period to bring a civil action regardless of how long ago the child sexual abuse occurred or how old they currently are. The one-year period ends on August 13th, 2020.
New York’s New Rape Laws, effective as of September of 2019:
- Extend the time frame for bringing a suit for money damages against the predator and private or public institution that could have prevented the abuse to 20 years.
Legal Changes Mean We Can Fight for All Sexual Abuse Victims
According to Mr. Lamonsoff, all these legislative changes were not just desirable but also necessary because they enable survivors of these unspeakable crimes to finally get a proper chance to tell their story and to pursue justice.

Sexual Abuse Takes Many Forms
While rape is a commonly reported form of sexual abuse, it is important to understand that it is far from the only type of sexual assault. “Sexual abuse” can be described as every interaction or contact that is intended to sexually stimulate the predator, or others at the choice of the predator. In addition to rape, sexual abuse also includes child pornography, inappropriate fondling or touching, any forced or unwanted oral contact, display of body parts, sexual hazing, incest, or lewd harassment in the workplace, etc.
Victims of sexual abuse can be male or female, adults or children, girls or boys. Sexual abusers can be strangers, relatives, coaches, teachers, doctors, therapists, supervisors and more.
Because only adults can legally consent to sexual contact or activity, adults who have sexual contact of any kind with a minor are engaging in sexual abuse.
