Our building collapse law firm recently learned of a partial collapse of a construction site late Monday morning that has left three construction workers dead and a fourth in critical condition.

The workers were in the process of dismantling a scaffold on an exterior lift system on Charter Square, an office building in downtown Raleigh. The entire lift system tore away from the side of the building, crashing into the street below.

A 911 call was placed at approximately 11:00 am. The caller estimated the men fell at least 200 feet in the mast climber scaffold, saying “we just had a mast climber fall off. There were men on it … They’re dead.”

The victims of the construction accident have been identified as Jose Erasmo Hernandez, Jose Luis Lopez-Ramirez, Anderson Almeida, and Elmer Guevara. Guevara is currently in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

A statement from Dominion Realty Partners, the owners of Charter Square, was released following the incident. “We offer our condolences to the victims and families affected by the construction accident today. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time, Construction has temporarily been suspended and we are cooperating with the City of Raleigh Fire Marshal and OSHA Investigators to determine the cause of the scaffolding collapse.”

Who Is Responsible For The Building Collapse In North Carolina?

The North Carolina Department of Labor is the lead agency looking into the Raleigh scaffolding collapse, though news organizations such as ABC have uncovered multiple (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) OSHA violations and investigations attributed to both Associated Staffing and Choate Construction.

While the reasons for the scaffolding collapse are still under investigation, representatives admit that something “went horribly wrong.”
