Toyota Unable to Hit Brakes on Crisis:

Adding further pressure in a growing recall saga that is denting the reputation of Toyota Motor Corp., Toyota announced that it is recalling 437,000 of its high-tech hybrid vehicles due to problems with anti-lock braking systems.  Hybrids, by going back and forth between a gasoline engine and electric motor, tend to offer better mileage in slow-speed and stop-and-go driving that's common in crowded cities.  The Prius, now in its third generation since its 1997 introduction, is the best-selling gas-electric hybrid in the world, racking up a cumulative 1.6 million units sold so far, according to Toyota.

Toyota claims it fixed this brake issue in January 2010 for all 2010 Prius to be produced in the future, blaming it on a software glitch.  However, the company was not planning on fixing the problem on 2010 Prius produced before January until 124 owners reported issues with braking, four of which resulted in car accidents.  These car accidents prompted the Department of Transportation to open an investigation.

Amid complaints from consumers worried that their cars won’t stop, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has also launched a formal investigation into brake concerns on the 2010 Toyota Prius.  The NHTSA has already received 100 complaints from Prius owners about braking problems which have resulted in accidents with injuries.  The concern centers around a flaw in the electronic software that controls the anti-lock brake system found in hybrid vehicles.  Toyota has placed a recall on 133,000 2010 Toyota Prius vehicles.  The defect has also been found in 2010 Lexus HS250h vehicles.   So far 14,500 of these Lexus vehicles have been recalled.

This new problem could pose a bigger question on Toyota’s quality and safety.  The Law Offices of Michael S. Lamonsoff, PLLC are and will aggressively seek redress against Toyota in the Courts for those who have been seriously injured or have lost loved ones as a result of an accident caused by an anti-lock brake defect in a Toyota vehicle.
